South Fork is one of the newest incorporated towns in the state of Colorado. It is situated at the south end of the San Luis Valley. The beautiful mountainous landscape creates picturesque scenery. Highways 160 and 149 intersect in the middle of town which is where the Silver Thread National Scenic Byway begins. South Fork is a great recreational area drawing in many tourists each year. As of the 2000 census the towns population was 604 however this number jumps dramatically to around 4000 in summer months.
The first phase of River Island Ranch had 55 parcels when first offered at th end of August 2006 and only 2 parcels remain. Phase 3 of River Island Ranch opened in April of 2007 with 44 parcels and 13 have sold to date. In October of 2007 we opened Phase 2 offering river front properties on the Rio Grande River and we only have 4 river front pieces left! Institutes of higher education can be found within only 120 miles of South Fork. A few of these include Adams State College, Western State College, Fort Lewis College and San Juan College. The Emmanual Christian Academy is a small private K-12 school located in South Fork. Other then this students typically attend schools in neighboring areas including Creede and Del Notre.
South Fork may be small but definetely has no shortage of activities. Over a million acres of national forest encompass the town. Enjoying the great outdoors has never been so easy! Take in the amazing scenery at the San Juan or Rioi Grande forests or have some fun at one of the towns many events. South Fork regularly hosts a craft festival and logging competition. |
